Abstract:

THeATRE is a multicenter intervention study that contributes to an innovative therapeutic multidimensional approach for older people: for the first time on a European multicultural sample (eight countries), the project aims at evaluating the effectiveness of creative interventions based on theatre, through a standardized methodology, to promote mental well-being and improve the quality of life and resilience of people with dementia at nursing/care homes, older people in the community, their family and staff carers; due to the community impact it aims at implementing preventive strategies and enhancing inclusive and supportive social networks too.
THeATRE creates a transferable trans-cultural specific model of Community Theatre Intervention (CTI), that implies workshops with participants empowering them to develop a performance and to present it in a larger community event. In CTI workshop sessions, multidimensional theatre exercises aim at empowering and integrating the person’s mental, physical and social wellbeing, promoting the maintenance of cognitive abilities, gaining a global re-activation (physical and psychological), paving the way to their resilience.
Eight national teams of trainers (theatre professionals, health carers, scientific researchers) are set up and trained to use, evaluate and harmonize the CTI model for its delivery. The study is performed through the application of a protocol with scientific indicators according to a clinical cognitive-behavioural and social evaluation.
This proposal relates to the topic PHC22-2015 through: the creation of a new adaptive therapeutic approach for prevention and treatment of mental conditions and disorders of older people, including those with dementia; a potential reduction of comorbidity through an increase of physical activity and fall’s reduction; it impacts on social and environmental stressors; it allows to study how the improvement of well-being impacts on the reduction on the use of drugs.
